Monitoring of Hate Speech in Relation to LGBTQ+ in Belarusian mass media.  January – June 2020

71% of monitored publications about LGBTQ+ in the Belarusian mass media contained correct vocabulary and 29% of monitored publications contained disparaging vocabulary in the first half-year of 2020. The number of publications with correct vocabulary exceeded 2.5 times the number of publications with disparaging vocabulary.

The correct vocabulary was used in 78% of monitored publications about LGBTQ+ in the nationwide mass media and 50% of such publications in the local media.

10% of publications on LGBTQ+ thematic in the Belarusian media contained hate speech in the first half year of 2020.

Accusations of attempts to seize power, expand, and domineer, accusations of imposing a negative impact on the society as well as statements about moral flaws of LGBTQ people were among the most frequently met manifestations of hate speech in relation to LGBTQ+ in the Belarusian media in the first half year of 2020.
